Testing Usability in Web Design
January 06, 2010

Usability is a very important aspect of Web Design, which should be tested before making a website live.  Usability plays a vital role in making a website successful, as it ensures that business message is delivered in effective and user friendly manner. Below are some techniques which can be used for testing usability in Web Design.

Prototyping is a common but effective tool used in design to practically 'try' out a design from user perspective. By using this tool, there are many little things that can be noticed and corrected, which could make a big difference in overall effectiveness and impact of a Web Design. Prototyping can be very helpful in testing usability as it focuses on the ‘user’ perspective.

Listing the User Tasks

Listing the user tasks is another simple technique to test usability in Web Design. In this method all the tasks that a user can perform are listed and then it is analyzed that how a user can perform these tasks. The trick is to facilitate user so that s/he can perform tasks of interest in the easiest possible manner.  This technique is simple but its outcome and eventual effect can be huge. Because at the end of the day, a website is a tool for people to use, and people don't like using annoying and difficult tools!
